It was 45 years ago that Beatle confidant and Apple Press Officer Derek Taylor published his first memoir, As Time Goes By. Long out of print, it has recently been re-published, this time with a contextualizing foreword penned by rock journalist Jon Savage (Mojo magazine, England’s Dreaming: Sex Pistols and Punk Rock, 1966: The Year The Decade Exploded, plus much more). Jon sat down with me to discuss Derek, As Time Goes By, The Beatles, the White Album, 1966, plus an array of offshoot topics.

    Thank you, Jon, for your remarks on The White Album as the last great one.I’ve been saying that for years and have been considered a nut. Nice to know that I’m not alone. After Pepper, Abby Road is their most overrated. Too much of it sounds like a precursor to 70s soft rock. Although there are some songs done after The White Album that I’d hate to miss,it would have been a great-superior-ending. Good Night.

      The White album ends with Good Night as a jarring contrast to Revolution 9. It’s the safe come down from a nightmare trip. imho 😉

      I think the best quote on this comes from Cynthia Lennon. Something along the lines of I knew John before all the sycophants got their hooks into him. Cynthia was basically describing Ono, Magic Alex and all the other charlatans that used Lennon. At the same time, I feel sympathy for John as he was so wired out by drugs. He needed “love” to rescue him. Ono presented that veneer.

    Savage used to delight in sneering about The Beatles during the punk era. Now he gleefully takes every Beatles promotional gig going – and with huge smugness, too. He’s as cynical as he is arrogant.
