In the first installment of what will, over time, serve as a commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the All You Need is Cash TV film, I spoke with director Gary Weis. In addition to his career as a documentary filmmaker, SNL short film creator and music video director, he recalls his work on The Rutles’ long-form “rockumentary,” as well as his interactions with George Harrison throughout his career.

    Great interview. Curious to know what people inferred about his relationship with Eric Idle.

      Yes, I wondered as well… When asked about Eric, Mr. Weis, began telling a story about a radio programme about stand -up comics, then moved to Steve Martin, and never answered the question about Eric Idle. I was dying to hear his impression. Apparently he didn’t want to discuss Eric personally.

    I’m confused why did Robert refer to the show as “Saturday Night” not “Saturday Night Live”??

    “Saturday Night Live with Howard Cosell is consistently confused with the sketch comedy program Saturday Night Live. In October 1975, rival network NBC began airing the late night comedy show NBC’s Saturday Night, the creation of producer Lorne Michaels. The shows did not compete for the same time slot. Cosell’s Saturday Night Live aired at 8 p.m. ET/PT, whereas NBC’s Saturday Night aired at 11:30 p.m. After Cosell’s show was cancelled, the NBC show was renamed Saturday Night Live.”

    I loved it. I’ve been a big fan of the Pre-Fab Four since All You Need is Cash first aired.
    Neil Innes is a true musical genius, and Eric Idle’s script was perfect.
    I finally got to meet Neil at a Fest for Beatles Fans a couple years ago. Such a nice man.
    It was wonderful to hear Mr. Weis’s stories. My only disappointment, was how many times Mr. Weis could not remember stuff. Oh, well, I was grateful for what he could remember, and I’ll remember the Rutles for a full Lunchtime!
